发明名称 MACHINE AND METHOD FOR HANDLING WORKPIECES
摘要 1277061 Endless and rotary conveyers AMERICAN CAN CO 23 July 1969 [25 July 1968] 37008/69 Heading B8A An apparatus adapted for use in feeding workpieces D in an orderly grouping, and positioning the grouped workpieces on an assembly machine (not shown), comprises (a) feed means 10 for receiving a supply of workpieces and advancing them seriatim to a stationary position (R.H. side of Fig. 3) for transfer; (b) means (Fig. 3) for transferring individual workpieces from the feed means to a next advanced position; (c) an indexing unit 80 (Fig. 1) operable in an endless path and having a plurality of spaced cup members 86 for receiving individual workpieces D, the unit 80 being intermittently driven in time with the transferring means to receive the workpieces D seriatim in the cup members 86 along one portion of its path during a period of arrest at the next advanced position and to position a group of the workpieces along an advanced portion of its path of travel (adjacent member 97, Fig. 1); and (d) ganged means (Fig. 7) operable during a period of arrest of the unit 80 at the advanced portion of its path to strip the group of workpieces from the arrested cup members D and position them on awaiting tools 98b of the assembly machine. The feed means.-Disc-like articles D are supplied from a hopper (not shown) to parallel slides 12 (Fig. 1) and are fed by wheels 15, 15, up to the stationary position defined by a stop 14. The rotary head transferring means.-Plungers 49 on a rotary head 30 are stepped round into position in pairs so that a pair of plungers 49 in a raised position (Fig. 2, not shown) are disposed above the leading pair of articles D which abut the stop 14. These two plungers of the pair are then lowered so that they engage the articles D frictionally, and when the pair of plungers is lifted, it lifts the articles D to a raised position clear of the slides 12. The head 30 is then stepped around to the advanced position where the pair of plungers is lowered. This positions two articles D in respective cup members 86. The raising and lowering of the plungers 49 is effected by a cam sector 62 (Fig. 4). This is engaged by pairs of upper and lower cam follower rollers 54, 54, carried respectively by each plunger 49. As the head is rotating into the stationary position the cam sector 62 is in its upper (Fig. 2, not shown) of two positions. In this position it fits into a sector-shaped space 71 (Fig. 4) in a cam disc 67 on which the pair of rollers 54, 54 of all the plungers 49 normally roll. Thus the pairs of rollers 54, 54 respective to the two plungers 49, 49, moving into the stationary position, roll off the cam disc 67 on to the cam sector 62. The latter is then lowered into the position of Fig. 3, by the action of a cam (not shown) acting on a vertical operating rod 58. The latter rod simultaneously operates a second cam sector 63 disposed diametrically opposite the sector 62 but at a lower level. The sector 63 in its upper position completes a second cam disc 68 (similar to the disc 67 but at a lower level) which co-operates with a second series of opposed upper and lower cam roller pairs 57, 57 carried respectively by all the plungers 49, 49. The sector 63 thus provides for lowering pairs of the plungers 49, 49 so as to position the articles D in respective cup members 86. The ganged positioning means.-The members 86 are indexed round until six of them have replaced six vacant members which have been indexed away in pairs in three stepped movements from their position above the member 97. Each of the ganged means comprises a cup release member 132 having a tapered camportion 123 (Fig. 8) at its lower end. All the six members 132 are lowerable simultaneously in synchronism with the dwell of the members 86 until each cam-portion 123 engages a conical bore 88c of each respective member 86. This releases the gripping engagement of each member 86 with its associated article D and enables the latter to be carried downwardly out of the member 86 and on to a mandrel 98. The six mandrels with their respective articles D mounted on them are then simultaneously moved away to the moulding machine. Detecting absence of article in a conveyer cup member.-A contact 140 (Figs. 8-10) is adapted to complete a circuit through to the mandrel 98 if an article is not present in the respective cup member 86 when the member 132 makes contact with it (instead of the non-metallic article D). This is arranged to send an appropriate signal to the moulding machine.
