[Also in Division D1] Novel basic amidocarboxylic acids of the formula wherein R is a C 2 -C 8 alkylene radical optionally interrupted by O or S atoms, R 1 is a hydroxypropylene radical, R 2 is a C 1 -C 20 organic radical, R 3 is an aliphatic or aromatic mononuclear radical, n and n 1 are integers from 1 to 5, m is 0 or 1, x and y are 1 or 2, and when m is 0, n + n 1 is 3, 4 or 5, or salts thereof are prepared by reacting 1 or 2 moles of a polyamine of formula with 1 mole of the anhydride of polycarboxylic acid of formula The reaction is preferably carried out at room temperature in the presence of an inert organic solvent. A polyamine of the above formula in which m is 1 can be suitably prepared by adding 2 moles of a polyamine of formula or on to 1 mole of a diepoxide of formula optionally in the presence of an alkaline catalyst e.g. NaOH, and an inert organic solvent at a temperature of from 100‹ to 160‹ C. Suitable polyamines of formula are ethylene-diamine, hexamethylene - diamine, diethylene - triamine, tetraethylene-pentamine, bisaminoethylglycol and mixtures thereof; suitable diepoxides of formula are those in which R 2 is a C 1 -C 20 alkyl radical; suitable polycarboxylic acids of formula are pyromellitic, trimellitic, phthalic, succinic, maleic and diglycollic acids. The compounds may be used as assistants in the dyeing of leather.</p> |
