<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly control NO<SB>x</SB>in exhaust gas by discharging NO<SB>x</SB>from an NO<SB>x</SB>storage type catalyst by supplying fuel in mist form from a fuel supply valve and reducing this discharged NO<SB>x</SB>to NH<SB>2</SB>. <P>SOLUTION: A NO<SB>x</SB>selective reduction catalyst 14 is arranged in an engine exhaust passage and the NO<SB>x</SB>storage type catalyst 12 capable of occluding NO<SB>x</SB>contained in the exhaust gas is arranged at upstream of the NO<SB>x</SB>selective reduction catalyst 14. An intermediate product consisting of binding molecules of hydrocarbon molecules greater than an equivalence ratio for one NO<SB>x</SB>molecule and NH<SB>2</SB>is generated by supplying the fuel in mist form to the NO<SB>x</SB>storage type catalyst 12 and by reacting NO<SB>x</SB>occluded in the NO<SB>x</SB>storage type catalyst 12 and the supplied fuel on the NO<SB>x</SB>storage type catalyst 12.
