<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high polymer/liquid crystal composite material that can exhibit high durability and reliability to light leakage caused by repeated driving in an element or the like, can attain a low driving voltage, and has excellent phase stability despite low high-polymer content, and to provide a liquid crystal display element by using the materials. <P>SOLUTION: The composite material according to the invention is formed by dispersing a polymeric unit (a) of specific polyfunctional compound, and a polymeric unit (b) of monofunctional compound in a liquid crystal material (Y) having no polymerizable group and polymerizing the dispersion under the optically isotropic condition. In the resultant composite material, at least a part of one of the unit (a) or the unit (b) originating from the methacrylate skeleton compound and at least a part of the other units from acrylate skeleton, and the construction unit content from the methacrylate skeleton is 1 to 99 mass% to the total copolymer (X) of the unit (a) and the unit (b). The mixture of 1 to 40 mass% of the copolymer (X) with 99 to 60 mass% of a liquid crystal material (Y) showing a chiral nematic phase or BP at room temperature and exhibits optical isotropy, when an electric field is applied. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT</p> |
