PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speedily discharge residual electric charges of a pixel without placing any overload on a video signal generating circuit when a liquid crystal display device is powered off. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes a display area where a plurality of pixels (1) each having a switch element (2) and electrode connected to a first terminal of the switch element are arrayed in a matrix form, a first scanning circuit (13) which controls conduction and non-conduction of the switch circuit through a first wiring line, a second scanning circuit (11) which controls conduction and non-conduction between a video signal generating circuit generating a video signal and a second wiring to supply the video signal to the pixel through the second wiring line, a discharging element (8) for discharging the video signal supplied to the pixel, and a control circuit (14) which turns on the switch element and makes the section between the video signal generating circuit and second wiring line nonconductive based upon a detection signal from a detecting circuit detecting a drop in source voltage to perform control for placing the discharging element in operation.
