PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which is capable of surely preventing display defects such as light leakage, contrast reduction, and gap unevenness by effectively suppressing movement of a spherical spacer, and a manufacturing method thereof. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display device which has a spherical spacer 101 disposed between a TFT substrate and a CF substrate and has a liquid crystal material held in a cell gap defined by the spherical spacer 101, a surface of the spherical spacer 101 and a surface of a region with which the spherical spacer 101 is brought into contact, of at least one substrate are roughened to increase a frictional force, thereby the spherical spacer 101 is hardly moved. Surface roughness (Rz jis) of the spherical spacer 101 and the substrate is set within a range of≥50 nm and≤5.5% of a diameter of the spherical spacer 101.
