PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inhibit attenuation of tumble flow produced when lift is very small and secure stable combustion properties in an internal combustion engine controlling intake air quantity by lift of the intake valve. SOLUTION: Two arc-shaped protrusions 8A, 8B of which center parts bulges at a cylinder wall 11 side passing below a center axis of intake valves 5A, 5B and below exhaust valves 6A, 6B adjacent to the intake valves 5A, 5B are formed on a piston crown surface 8a. Thereby, flow flowing in from a cylinder wall 11 side and flow flowing in from a part between two intake valves 5A, 5B hit the protrusions 8A, 8B provided on the piston crown surface 8a to change flow direction to upward. Consequently, attenuation due to collision can be avoided and flow is conserved. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
