PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide mold powder for starting casting and a continuous casting method using this mold powder with which while preventing the contamination of molten steel, an excellent heat-retaining effect is exhibited. SOLUTION: (1) The mold powder for continuously casting the molten steel is as the followings, that is; CaO/SiO<SB>2</SB>is 1.0-1.9 , Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>is 2-18% ; the total content of Na<SB>2</SB>O, Li<SB>2</SB>O and F is 2-25%; carbonate content is 2.5-7.0% in terms of carbon; sodium nitrate content is 5.1-8.0% ; carbon content is 0-5%; Ca-Si alloy and/or metallic Si content is 7-20%; and iron oxide content is <2.0% in terms of Fe<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>; Mn oxide content is <3.0% in terms of MnO, the solidification temperature is 1,050-1,250°C, viscosity at 1,300°C is 0.04-1.5 Pa s. (2) This method for continuously casting the steel, is performed as the followings, that is; the above (1) mold powder is added in an amount of 0.1-2 kg per 100 cm<SP>2</SP>of a mold crossing area at start of the casting and successively, the mold powder for ordinarily casting is added.
