PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an observation apparatus capable of quickly and/or easily grasping the distribution of a phase object. SOLUTION: The observation apparatus 1 includes: a surface light source 14 where a bright part and a dark part are repeatedly formed; an imaging optical system 12 for imaging light from an object 10 to be observed illuminated by the surface light source; and an image pickup means 11 for picking up the image of the object 10 through the imaging optical system.
