PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display which can reduce the discomfort of the viewers resulting from the brightness changing in the room due to the image display light reflected in the room, and provide its control method. SOLUTION: The external light sensor 104 detects the external light in the environment that an image display 100 is installed, and the illuminance by the light reflected in this environment is calculated with a reflection calculator 105 by using the APL value of the image displayed on a display part 102. The brightness gain control value is produced from the first adjusting value obtained from the APL value and the second adjusting value obtained from the reflection amount in order to correct the peak brightness level of the image frame data emitting a large amount of light from the display part 102.
