PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing nickel oxide powder having a low sulfur grade and a large specific surface area, and suitable as an electronic component material by subjecting nickel sulfate or anhydrous nickel sulfate having crystallization water to heating decomposition. SOLUTION: Anhydrous nickel sulfate is fired at 900 to 1,000°C in an oxidizing atmosphere, so as to be heated and decomposed into nickel oxide, thereafter, the obtained nickel oxide is heated at 750 to 900°C in an oxidizing atmosphere, and the grade of sulfur is controlled to the range of 100 to 500 ppm, and its specific surface area is controlled to the range of 2.5 to 4 m<SP>2</SP>/g. The anhydrous nickel sulfate as the raw material can be obtained by heating nickel sulfate having crystallization water at 450 to 600°C in an oxidizing atmosphere. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
