PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bearing unit for supporting a wheel whereby a production cost and an administration cost can be reduced by making it commonly usable in right and left wheels while protecting an encoder. SOLUTION: In this bearing unit 10 for supporting the wheel, a plurality of window parts 44a, 44b in which a sensor 35 to detect rotation of the encoder 34 can be inserted are formed in a cover member 40 fixed to the inboard side end part of an outer ring 12, and the window part 44b in which the sensor 35 is not inserted is closed by a plug member 50.
