A character input device and a method thereof are provided to reduce the character input time by reducing the number of button manipulation. A key pad(30) comprises a plurality of consonant button, and a plurality of vowel button. More than two alphabets are arranged to the plurality of consonant and vowel buttons. A Hangul detecting sensor(32) senses the pressing continuing time, and decides hangul vowel, and consonant by the pressing continuing time. An English alphabet detecting sensor(35) senses the consonant and vowel button pressing time, and selects an alphabet character according to the compared result of button pressing time, and alphabet selecting time.
