PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a virtual pet or a character-shaped item such as stuffed animals and the like, which can communicate and socialize with one another voluntarily. SOLUTION: The virtual pet or character-shaped item such as stuffed animals and the like is a virtual pet (including a computer, operated electrically and having a part that is supposed to be a body) which its user takes for walk. The virtual pet includes: a greeting signal transmitting means for radio-transmitting "a predetermined greeting signal by a virtual pet" so that the signal can be received by other virtual pets nearby; and a greeting signal receiving means for receiving "the predetermined greeting signal by a virtual pet" radio-transmitted from other virtual pets nearby.
