PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for nondestructively and easily assuming a horizontal distribution of root system, in view of the fact that the distribution and condition of root system of greening trees are important information for performing protection management of trees such as transplantation and tree treatment. SOLUTION: This method for assuming the root system distribution of trees comprises giving vibration to the trunk of a tree, measuring oscillatory wave caused from the vibration of the tree in many places in soil around the trunk, preferably, places on a plurality of concentric circles, centering the trunk of the tree, and positioned on a radial linear line generating from the trunk, and assuming the root system distribution of the tree by the measured value.
