摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coated cutting tool having a hard coating layer exerting an excellent chipping resistance in a high-speed, heavy duty cutting process. SOLUTION: On the surface of the base of a work for cutting tool consisting of cemented carbide alloy, cermet, and boron nitride based ultra-high-pressure sintered material in cubic crystal form, the hard coating layer as a reformed (Al,Ti)N layer is formed consisting of Al-Ti complex nitrides to meet the composition formula (Al<SB>1-X</SB>Ti<SB>X</SB>)N, where X ranges from 0.40 to 0.60 in atomic ratio, wherein the layer exhibits such a crystalline orientation that 50% or more in area is shared by the crystal grains having a crystal azimuth of <111> within the range from 0 to 15 degrees from the normal to the polished surface when a crystal azimuth analysis by EBSD is conducted for the complex nitride layer and that the rate of the small-angle grain boundary (0<θ≤15°) is 50% or more according to the measurement of the angle formed between adjoining crystal grains.
