PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a closed external fan electric motor for improving a cooling performance, and reducing a fan noise. SOLUTION: The electric motor comprises: an electric motor body 10 having a closed case 20, a rotating shaft 22 rotatably supported by the case through a bearing and outwardly protruded from the case at an end, a rotor 25 provided on the rotating shaft within the case, and a stator provided within the case; a cooling fan 12 attached to the end of the rotating shaft outside the case, and rotated along with the rotating shaft; a fan cover 14 attached to the case so as to cover the cooling fan, having an introduction opening 40 facing the cooling fan and a discharge opening 42 located on an outer circumference of the case, introducing the air from the introduction opening, discharging the air from the discharge opening, and guiding the air to the outer circumference of the case; and an airflow adjusting mechanism for varying an opening area of the discharge opening in response to a rotation speed of the cooling fan.
