PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simply and effectively removing metal catalyst residues and impurities in the production of a cycloolefin addition (co)polymer. SOLUTION: The method for producing the cycloolefin addition (co)polymer comprises providing a cycloolefin addition (co)polymer prepared by addition copolymerization using cyclic olefin monomers, and bringing a polymer from a salt monomer comprising an onium cation having a polymerizable functional group and an organic anion having the polymerizable functional group into contact with a solution of the cycloolefin addition (co)polymer, followed by purification. In the contact, the method for producing the cycloolefin addition (co)polymer, in a preferred embodiment, uses a mixture of the polymer of the salt monomer and an ordinary temperature molten salt.
