PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dimer alcohol in a high yield and a high selectivity in subjecting a 4C or lower alcohol as a raw material to the Guerbet reaction in the presence of a transition-metal-containing complex and a base. SOLUTION: The alcohol production method is one for dimerizing a 4C or lower alcohol as a raw material in the presence of a complex containing at least one type of transition metals and a base, wherein the complex is one in which the coordinating atom is nitrogen.
