PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide novel thallium-sensitive assays for identifying modulators of ion channels, channel-linked receptors or ion transporters (hereinafter referred to as "ion channel or the like"). SOLUTION: A method for detecting and measuring the activity of ion channel or the like expressed in cells comprises: (a) contacting cells expressing ion channel or the like with a signal-generating thallium sensitive agent; (b) contacting the cells with a candidate modulator of ion channel or the like; (c) contacting the cells with an assay buffer containing a thallium salt solution; and (d) detecting and measuring the signal generated by the signal-generating thallium sensitive agent to determine the effect of the candidate modulator of ion channel or the like on the activity of the ion channel or the like.
