A channel search device of an image display apparatus and a method thereof are provided to reduce brightness of a screen by a predetermined level during channel search, and return the bright level to the original brightness level when the channel search is completed in order to remove various screen instability occurring during auto channel search largely, thereby drastically reducing fatigue of user's eyes. A request command is input to a user interface from a user. When the channel search command is input from the user interface, a controller controls brightness of a corresponding signal to be adjusted to a predetermined level during the channel search. A tuner tunes and divides an input broadcast signal input from the outside according to a control signal of the controller. An image signal processor adjusts the brightness of the image signal divided by the tuner according to the control signal of the controller. A display unit displays a video signal processed by an image signal processor.
