PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data processing method and system for appropriately acquiring, in editing on the basis of editing data containing identification data identifying material data of an object to be edited, the material data on the basis of the identification data. SOLUTION: A data processing method includes: a first step of generating, at a first editing device, editing data containing identification data MD uniquely identifying material data to be edited; a second step of generating, at a first data processing apparatus, management data MD indicating the generated identification data in association with a location in a recording medium of the material data identified by the identification data, and recording the management data on the recording medium together with the material data; a third step of specifying, at a second data processing apparatus, the location in the recording medium of the material data corresponding to the identification data contained in the editing data generated in the first step, on the basis of the management data MD read from the recording medium; and a fourth step of acquiring, at a second editing device, the material data from the location in the recording medium specified in the third step.
