<p>1286742 Composting PORTLAND-ZEMENTWERKE HEIDELBERG AG 24 Feb 1970 [3 April 1969] 8841/70 Heading C1B In a composting process, humid crude compost material (particularly a mixture of 75% domestic refuse and 25% clarification sludge) which has been broken down, e.g. to 40 mm pieces, is subjected to an intensive kneading action, e.g. by a kneading machine known from the rubber, plastics, dough preparation or clay processing industry, so as to break up and disintegrate paper and foil scraps, before the composting. Hygienization, i.e. the destruction of pathogenic bacteria, and ripening of the compost is carried out by passing air through the compost, either by blowing or by suction, the air being fed in as cadenced surges interrupted by rest periods of 10-60 minutes, the length of the rest periods being such that the oxygen content of the waste gas does not fall below 10%. If this occurs, anaerobic processes begin to develop. The required humidity of the compost may be maintained by spraying. More rapid ripening of the compost is obtained by this method than by previous methods.</p> |
