PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a street illumination system with power consumption lessened, capable of securing necessary illumination with people around, and doing away with failures such as lighting off of a lamp even if people are around at the time when a lighting mode is shifted from the nighttime to the midnight. SOLUTION: The street lighting system is provided with a lamp, a ballast, a human detection sensor, a control part, and an automatic blinking unit controlling power supply. The control part is provided with a plurality of lighting modes. A nighttime lighting mode is extended at transition from the nighttime to the midnight duration, when presence of human bodies are detected. When the presence is not detected, the system turns to a dimmed lighting or a lighting-off state, and, when it is detected, the lamp is fully lit, so that power consumption is lessened and necessary illumination is secured at presence of human bodies. Since, moreover, a nighttime lighting mode is extended not to shift a lighting mode, there will be no such failures as lighting off despite presence of the human bodies at shifting into the midnight mode.
