The present invention describes a device which can be used to purify and separate hydrogen produced by reformation of liquid or gaseous fuels. The device consists of a monolithic structure which functions to support a hydrogen permeable membrane into its pores. The monolith is made out of porous ceramic material such as alumina or cordierite, while the membrane is a dense material such as alumina, silica, zeolite, etc. The reformate gas which contains hydrogen and other gases is directed into alternate cells of the monolith while the other cells function to collect hydrogen which elutes into them through the membrane. A suitable catalyst, promoting the water-gas-shift reaction is deposited onto the inner walls of the cells through which the reformate gas is flowing. Suitable catalyst, promoting the carbon monoxide methanation reaction is deposited onto the inner walls of the cells which collect hydrogen so as to convert any carbon monoxide which elutes through the membrane to methane. This device is very compact, offering very high area for the transport of hydrogen and it produces essentially pure hydrogen, free of carbon monoxide, which can be fed directly into fuel cells of any type. |
