The method involves determining values for losses e.g. churning losses, for operating data and operating parameters e.g. operating temperature, maximum rotational speed, maximum torque and ambient temperature, for different lubricating oils. The oil with smallest value is determined. Dependency of viscosity of the lubricating oils on the temperature is stored in a database for a list of the lubricating oils. Dependency of dissipation losses in a gearbox based on the viscosities is stored in another database. An independent claim is also included for a computer program product for a lubricating oil determining method.
