An aquarium forms a closed system, and a lower container region (3) of the closed system is filled with the water. An upper container region (4) of the closed system is filled with gas i.e. air, and a watertight lockable opening (13) is provided in the container. A substrate of the system forms a subsurface for algae and/or bacteria, and consists of a fibrous material i.e. coconut fibers.
