PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved technique for solving the problem occurring when a probe cable is selectively utilized. SOLUTION: A probe head 10 and the probe cable 20 are attachable to and detachable from each other. Thus, it is possible to use a relatively long probe cable 20L during a surgery operation for instance and use a short probe cable 20S in an inspection room. When the length of the probe cable 20 is different, the capacitance component or the like of a signal line within the probe cable 20 changes and it is thought that the transmission/reception characteristics of ultrasonic waves change for each probe cable 20 or the like as a result. Then, a detection line for detecting the physical state of the probe cable 20 is provided inside the probe cable 20, and thus it is possible to detect the capacitance component of the probe cable 20 or the like, for instance.
