PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide low density book paper which has a low density, has excellent ink receptivity (ink adhesion), opacity, surface smoothness, and surface strength, and is flexible. SOLUTION: This low density book paper is obtained by coating base paper mainly containing chemical pulp and 1.0-5.0 mass% of hydrated silica having an oil absorption of 360-500 ml/100g, light calcium carbonate, and talc in material pulp, with a surface-treating agent containing a pigment containing≥60 mass% of calcium carbonate within the range of≤1.5 g/m<SP>2</SP>per one side, and has an ash content of 18-28%, a density of≤0.60 g/m<SP>3</SP>, a brightness of≥77.0%, and an opacity of≥92.0%.
