In an internal combustion engine, discharge of unburnt fuel components is suppressed. The number of execution times of sub-fuel injection is altered based on the operating region to which the operating state of the internal combustion engine belongs such that the number of execution times of sub-fuel injection increases as the load on the internal combustion engine becomes lower or the speed of the internal combustion engine becomes lower. Furthermore, the operating region where the number of execution times of sub-fuel injection is large is enlarged to the high load side and the high rotation side as the atmospheric pressure becomes lower, the cooling water temperature of the internal combustion engine becomes lower, or the intake temperature of the internal combustion engine becomes lower.
