PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which is capable of performing proper light quantity correction by reducing the effect of dust deposited on a sub scan density reference or noise for the unit of a line and suppressing the influence of read level variation that occurs for the unit of a line. SOLUTION: When reading a sub scan density reference that is provided outside a document placing area, image data for a plurality of pixels are added in a main scan direction, results of the addition are further added for a plurality of lines and a result thereof is defined as read data of the sub scan density reference, such that the sub scan density reference can be read as a plane area.
