PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for diagnosing potential faults reflected in operation data for a turbine engine. SOLUTION: A method 100 for diagnosing potential faults 120 reflected in operational data 106 for a turbine engine 102 includes a step of generating a diagnostic pattern 118 for the operational data and steps 136, 138 of comparing the diagnostic pattern with a plurality of historical patterns 134. The diagnostic pattern comprises a plurality of scalars. Each scalar represents an arithmetic relationship between values of the operational data and values predicted by a baseline thermodynamic model 110. Each historical pattern 134 is linked to one or more specific faults. Consequently, the one or more potential faults 142 reflected in the operational data are discriminated.
