A method for controlling an engine having a variable valve actuator, the method comprising of operating the engine in a first mode where the engine carries out spark ignition combustion of air and fuel; and changing operation to a second mode where the engine carries out homogenous charge compression ignition combustion of air and fuel, where said variable valve actuator unit is adjusted in response to said change to provide a shorter valve opening or lift.
