A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery having a high energy density in which temperature rise of the battery can be suppressed sufficiently upon occurrence of short circuit. In a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery (1) where a positive electrode plate (5) having a positive electrode mixture layer containing a positive electrode active material capable of absorbing/desorbing lithium and a positive electrode core material, a negative electrode plate (6) having a negative electrode mixture layer containing a negative electrode active material capable of absorbing/desorbing lithium and a negative electrode core material, a separator (7)interposed between the positive electrode plate and the negative electrode plate, and a nonaqueous electrolyte are enclosed in a battery case (2). This nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is characterized in that at least one of the positive electrode plate (5) and the negative electrode plate (6) has an electrode plate resistance of 0.4 O?cm2 or more in the thickness direction when it is pressed with a force of 50 kg/cm2 under a charged state.
