PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminating device and a projection type image display device having easily adjustable color reproducibility while maintaining display performance equivalent to an image input signal. SOLUTION: A movable dichroic mirror 71 is a color separation part to separate white light emitted by a white light source, and includes a light incident surface 71a which has a predetermined tilt angle to the optical axis of light to be separated including at least two kinds of color component light out of red component light R, green component light G and blue component light B, and where cutoff wavelength that is wavelength to separate the light to be separated is adjusted according to the incident angle of the light to be separated.
