PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a grinding method having merits of both step cutting and spiral cutting. SOLUTION: Step cutting and spiral cutting are switched so that a coarse grinding step is started by step cutting, and a finish grinding step is completed by spiral cutting. When a measuring device detects a final finish dimension of a workpiece during spiral cutting, cutting is switched to spark out. First turn of finish grinding immediately after switched to spiral cutting is started at a cutting volume smaller than a cutting volume of a setting finish grinding. Even if the workpiece is ground at a predetermined number of revolution as set, therefore, spark out is secured and dimensional accuracy is secured, so that a finish grinding time is not extended. When the workpiece reaches the final finish dimension, spark out is done, so as to prevent the workpiece from being ground over the final finish dimension (i.e., overground).
