1285431 Olefins BP CHEMICALS Ltd 11 Dec 1970 [2 Jan 1970] 157/70 Heading C5E [Also in Division C2] Olefins are produced by the codismutation of other olefins and unsaturated nitriles by contacting them at an elevated temperature with a catalyst comprising a molybdenum and/or tungsten compound deposited on a solid support. For example, the reaction of acrylonitrile and propylene yields crotononitrile and ethylene and the reaction of 3-pentenenitrile and ethylene yields 3-butenenitrile and propylene. The olefin starting material may itself undergo a reaction to give other olefins, e.g. ethlyene and butene-2 may be obtained from propylene. The catalyst may also contain a promoter, e.g. a compound of cobalt, nickel, titanium or chromium. |
