1285861 Electrode composition ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 5 Jan 1970 404/70 Heading B1E [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] A catalyst composition for a fuel cell electrode comprises a mixture of Pt or Pt alloy and at least one metal sulphide. Specified sulphides are Mo, W, As, Cu and Hg. Platinum alloys specified are Pt-Pd, Pt-Ir, Pt-Ru and Pt-Rh. The composition may also contain (a) a powdered ductile metal e.g. Au or Ti, (b) a plastics material, e.g. polyacrylonitrile, epoxy resin or polyethylene; or (c) graphite or tantalum. In the Examples (i) Pt black, molybdenum sulphide, polyethylene powder and sodium sulphate are mixed and moulded, the sodium sulphate being then dissolved out before use. (ii) Raney Pt, tungsten sulphide, gold powder and sodium sulphate are moulded; (iii) Platinum oxide, silver sulphide, gold powder and sodium sulphate are mixed, moulded and then the platinum oxide is reduced cathodically; (iv) hexachloro platinic acid solution, and mercury sulphide are mixed, the mixture is dried and the platinum salt reduced to platinum by hydrogen. The resultant dried mixture is mixed with graphite, sodium sulphate and polyethylene powder and moulded; (v) Copper sulphide and platinum powder are coprecipitated from hydrochloric acid solution by introduction of hydrogen sulphide. The resultant mixture is mixed with graphite, polyethylene and sodium sulphate and moulded. |
