Disclosed is a method for producing an aromatic polymer which is characterized in that an aromatic compound represented by the formula (I) below is polycondensed in the presence of a nickel complex containing a phosphine compound represented by the formula (II) below. (I) (In the formula, Ar represents an aromatic ring-containing organic group having an aromatic ring which may contain an oxygen atom and/or a nitrogen atom; R represents a monovalent group containing a hydrocarbon group; k represents an integer of not less than 1; X represents a halogen atom, a nitro group or -SO3Q (wherein Q represents a monovalent hydrocarbon group); Y represents O, S, an imino group, an ethenylene group or an ethynylene group; n represents 0 or 1; and M represents H, -B(OQ<1>)2, -Si(Q<2>)3, -Sn(Q<3>)3 or -Z<1>(Z<2>)m (wherein Q<1> represents H or a monovalent hydrocarbon group; Q<2> and Q<3> respectively represent a monovalent hydrocarbon group; Z<1> represents a metal atom or a metal ion; Z<2> represents a counter ion; and m represents an integer of not less than 0).)
