A solar powered cooking system captures solar energy by means of a flat sheet formed into a lens shape of a suitable focal length. Preferably, the capture of solar energy is managed using an azimuth tracking frame in which the lens is mounted. The solar energy may be used to heat a double drum insulated cooking vessel; the cooking vessel may comprise a night time insulating cover. Preferably, the lens is formed using a flat sheet of plastic tensioned across its diagonals to form a lens of variable focal length. In use, the system operates in such a way that once the cooking vessel and the surroundings are sufficiently heated, cooking may proceed and continue whilst the system is not receiving solar energy, due to the high degree of insulation. |
