The rotary cutter has a top and bottom blade (5,7) which form an adjustable cutting gap (S). At least one of the blades is adjustable and its zero position is automatically determined by a signal transmitter (D1). The adjustment device (10) has an adjusting drive (12) with which the adjustable blade can be moved automatically from the zero position to the cutting position controlled by the signal transmitter. The signal transmitter can detect a rotational movement of the adjustable blade.
