Marking out dress making pattersn on a paper sheet (1) having a reference edge line (1a) by lying all the alignment notches (A1-A6) of the pattern elements on a common line (1c) which is parallel to the reference edge line (1a). Alignment of the garment panels during assembly is made easier. Pref. the paper sheet (1) includes a median reference line (1b) which is spaced from the reference edge line (1a) by a distance approximately equal to the length of the pattern elements and further pattern elements are marked out on the sheet with their alignment notches (B1-B4) lying on a common line (1d) parallel to the reference edge line. Pref. when the sheet (1) is applied to a fabric piece to cut out the patterns, the edge reference line (1a) is aligned with a reference line on the fabric piece.
