1337086 Artificial sweeteners TATE & LYLE Ltd 12 May 1972 [25 May 1971] 16925/71 Heading A2B [Also in Division C3] A sweet substance, suitable as an artificial sweetener, comprising a polypeptide including units from 17 specified amino acids is produced by digesting the mucilaginous portion of the berries of Dioscoreophyllum cumminsii with pectinase, separating a sweet proteinaceous fraction from the pectinase digest and treating this with a proteolytic enzyme (papain or bromelain activated with cysteine hydrochloride). Such treatment may be carried out in more than one stage upon a sweet fraction separated from the product of the previous stage by selective precipitation from aqueous solution with ammonium sulphate or ethanol, or by chromatography, until a sweet substance having a MW of approximately 8,500 or 6,000 is obtained. The sweet substance may be put up in the form of powders, tablets or liquid using such diluents as lactose, sucrose, soy protein, starch, water, ethanol, glycerol and edible oils. In the disclosed tests the sweet substance is added to bland soy protein isolate or grapefruit juice. |
