A system and method for controlling the operation of a vehicle traveling to a predetermined destination in which the vehicle has more than one route available to reach the predetermined destination. A vehicle's driver operating preferences and operating characteristics for the vehicle such as a predicted time to reach the predetermined destination, predicted fuel economy, shortest route and quickest route are determined for at least some of the routes and one of the routes is selected based at least in part on the determined operating characteristics and the driver's operating preference. An algorithm is used along with weighting factors to operating characteristics to rank the available routes. The controller providing informational output indicating the selected route to the user of the vehicle.
