A manufacturing method of the cyclic olefin resin is provided to manufacture a cyclic olefin resin of a norbornene-based polymer including an imide group with the high molecular weight and high yield by using cheap catalyst with a simple structure in a small amount. A manufacturing method of the cyclic olefin resin comprises a step for the ring-opening polymerization of the monomer having cycloalkene in the presence of a solvent and at least one catalyst selected from the following chemical formula 1-3. The chemical formula 1 is NiX2, wherein X is the halogen atom or the alkyl group having 1~10 hydrogens. The chemical formula 2 is (R1NiX)2, wherein X is the halogen atom or the alkyl group having 1~10 hydrogens, R1 is a C3~C12 alkyl group. The chemical formula 3 is R2mNiX2, wherein X is the halogen atom or the alkyl group having 1~10 hydrogens, R2 is (alkyl or aryl) nitrile or cyclodiene, and m is 1 or 2.
