1293615 Tool changers; drilling and boring machines KEARNEY & TRECKER CORP 13 May 1970 [15 May 1969] 23154/70 Headings B3B and B3C In a tool change mechanism for interchanging tools 46 between a tool magazine 28 and a tool spindle 20 and in which a tool change arm 32 rotates through a first movement from a parked vertical position to engage tools in the magazine and spindle and then rotates through a second movement to exchange the tools, there is provided a frame 38 carrying the tool change arm, a first drive means, e.g. cylinder 73, and rack 72, for effecting a first 90 degrees rotation of the arm 32, a second drive means, e.g. a cylinder 80 and rack 78, for effecting a second 180 degrees rotation of the arm 32, and actuating means for selectively coupling said first or said second drive means to said arm 32 for completing the two separate movements of the arm in a tool change cycle. The said actuating means comprises a cylinder 48 that acts to move the arm 32 with its supporting shaft 34 axially to withdraw the tools from the spindle 20 and magazine 28 and at the same time ensures that a gear 62 carried on the shaft 34 moves out of engagement with rack 72 and into engagement with rack 78, and vice-versa. The arm 32 includes spring roller gripping means 45 at each end. The magazine 28 comprises a chain conveyer 27 supporting tool sockets that are tilted through 90 degrees at a tool exchange station to present a tool 46 parallel to the spindle 20. The complete magazine and tool changer arrangement 24 is free standing separate from the machine tool and connected to a control unit 25. The machine tool and tool changing cycle are controlled by recorded data on punched tape. The machine tool comprises a bed 10, a worktable 11 slidable on the bed, a column 14 horizontally movable on the bed 10 and supporting a vertically movable spindle head 18. The movable parts are driven by a lead-screw and recirculating ball nut drive. |
