Synthetic polymeric fibrous materials, e.g. polyamides, polyesters, polyacrylonitrile and polyvinyl chloride, are rendered antistatic by treating them with salts having the general formula <FORM:0889682/IV (c)/1> which R1 is an alkyl residue containing at least 10 carbon atoms, R2 and R3 which may be the same or different, are hydrogen atoms or alkyl or aryl residues, R4 is an aliphatic or aromatic residue, R5, R6 and R7 are the same or different alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or aralkyl residues and X is an acid residue. The salts may be applied by spraying or impregnating the materials with solutions of the salts in water or organic solvents. Suitable salts are N-tetradecyl-N1 - (3 - dimethylamino) - propylurea quaternised with dimethyl sulphate and N-octadecyl-N1-(3-dimethylamino)-propylurea quaternised with dimethyl sulphate or 2-bromoethanol.
