In the moulding of a boot or other hollow article, a mould is partially filled in a tilted position with a gellable liquid, and any air bubbles in the toe or other recess allowed to escape before the mould is turned into an upright position and completely filled, heated to deposit a gelled layer on the inner surface of the mould, completely drained of liquid, and again heated to fuse the gelled layer to form the article which is stripped from the mould after cooling. A boot or other hollow article having a roughened interior surface is obtained by spraying the gelled layer prior to fusing with powdered polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, or a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer. To obtain an article having a thickened portion at a certain area (or more than one such portion) the mould is not completely drained after the initial gelling, and the residual ungelled liquid is distributed over the desired area or areas by tilting the mould to and fro while heating it to completely gel the residual liquid. A further layer of a gelled material may be applied over the whole interior surface of the mould prior to fusing, for providing insulation, decoration, or reinforcement of the boot or other article.
