A modular system for recovering low-grade waste solar generated energy in a ceiling space is disclosed. The system uses a vapour compression cycle for transferring roof space air heat to a thermal water storage vessel. A plenum duct (5) warm air scavenging reservoir encloses a series of modular evaporator panels (4) interconnected in parallel to refrigerant header tubes (3) and refrigerator lines in an endless loop through a compressor (2) encapsulated in the base of the vessel and a heat exchanger (8) immersed in the water.
