A phenyl-1,3,5-triazine compound represented by the general formula (1): (1) [wherein Ar¹ and Ar² each independently represents (un)substituted phenyl, naphthyl, or biphenyl; R¹, R², and R³ each independently represents hydrogen or methyl; X¹ and X² each independently represents (un)substituted phenylene, naphthylene, or pyridylene; p and q each independently is an integer of 0 to 2; and Ar³ and Ar⁴ each independently represents (un)substituted pyridyl or phenyl]. This compound is useful as an organic electroluminescent device.
